Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about fence installation, repair, permits, and pricing.

General Questions

What areas does Malone's Fence serve?

We are based in Lutz, Florida and serve Pasco, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties — including Wesley Chapel, Dade City, Land O' Lakes, Lutz, Spring Hill, Brooksville, Zephyrhills, San Antonio, and surrounding communities.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Malone's Fence is fully licensed and insured. We have been family-owned and operating in Florida since 2015.

How do I get a free estimate?

Call (813) 601-8455 or submit our contact form. We respond the same business day and schedule a free, on-site visit where we walk your property before providing an itemized written quote.

How much does a fence cost in the Tampa Bay area?

Costs depend on material, length, height, and gate count. As a rough guide: chain link runs $12–$22 per linear foot, wood $18–$32, aluminum $30–$50, and vinyl $30–$55. We provide free, on-site estimates with itemized written quotes — no phone quotes, no surprises.

Do you handle HOA approvals and county permits?

Yes. We pull permits with Pasco, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties and submit HOA paperwork on your behalf as part of the project.

How long do most fence projects take?

Most residential fences install in 2–4 days once we are on site. Permits and HOA approvals typically take 1–3 weeks before install begins. Larger custom projects, automated gates, or land clearing + fence projects can extend timelines — we give you a real schedule with every estimate.

Do you offer financing?

We do not offer in-house financing, but we work with projects of all sizes and can discuss phased payment schedules for larger projects. We accept checks, bank transfers, and major credit cards.

Can you handle emergency or storm damage repair?

Yes. After major storms we prioritize emergency calls — typically on site within 24–48 hours, often same-day for situations involving loose pets or open pools. Call (813) 601-8455.

Vinyl Fence

How much does a vinyl fence cost in Florida?

Vinyl fence in the Tampa Bay area generally runs $30–$55 per linear foot installed, depending on style, height, and gate count. A typical residential backyard (150–200 linear feet of 6-foot privacy) lands between $4,500 and $9,500. We provide free, on-site estimates so your Wesley Chapel or Dade City property gets a real number — not a phone quote.

How long does vinyl fence last?

Quality vinyl fence is engineered to last 20–30+ years and ships with a lifetime manufacturer warranty against fading, cracking, and discoloration. Florida sun is brutal on cheaper vinyl — that is why we install only premium UV-stabilized panels rated for the Gulf Coast climate.

Can vinyl fence handle Florida hurricanes?

Vinyl is designed to flex under wind load, which actually helps it survive tropical storms better than rigid materials. We set posts in concrete to local code, use reinforced rails on tall privacy panels, and install hurricane-rated hardware. After a storm, individual panels can pop out of the rails to relieve pressure rather than ripping the entire fence out of the ground.

What colors and styles do you offer?

Standard vinyl colors are white, tan, and almond. We also carry premium woodgrain laminates that look like cedar or walnut from the curb. Styles include full privacy, semi-privacy with lattice top, shadowbox, classic picket, ranch rail, and pool-code-compliant designs.

Do you handle HOA approvals?

Yes. Many Wesley Chapel and Lutz neighborhoods have HOAs with specific fence requirements. We install styles, heights, and colors that meet the most common HOA standards in Pasco and Hillsborough counties, and we can provide spec sheets and renderings for your application.

Wood Fence

View Service
How long does a wood fence last in Florida?

A properly built pressure-treated wood fence lasts 12–18 years in the Tampa Bay climate. Sealing or staining every 2–3 years extends that significantly. Cedar lasts longer than pine but costs more upfront. Our concrete-set posts and galvanized hardware are what separate a fence that lasts 15 years from one that fails in 5.

Pine vs cedar — which should I choose?

For most Pasco and Hernando County homeowners, pressure-treated pine is the right call: durable, affordable, and readily available. Cedar costs roughly 30–50% more but offers natural rot and insect resistance plus a richer, more uniform look. We help you weigh the tradeoffs at your free estimate.

Should I stain my wood fence?

Sealing or staining is not required, but it dramatically extends the life of the fence and keeps it looking new. Florida sun greys untreated wood quickly. We can stain at install or you can wait 60–90 days for the wood to fully dry, then apply a UV-protective sealer or semi-transparent stain.

Can you build a wood fence on a sloped yard?

Yes — many Wesley Chapel and Dade City lots have grade changes. We use either stair-step (panels stay level, step down at each post) or racked (panels follow the grade) construction depending on what looks best on your specific terrain.

How tall can a wood fence be in Pasco County?

Most Pasco County residential zones allow 6-foot privacy fence in side and rear yards and 4-foot in front yards. Some neighborhoods and HOAs have stricter rules. We pull permits and verify height limits as part of every wood fence project.

Aluminum Fence

What is Puppy Picket and do I need it?

Puppy Picket is an add-on that doubles the picket density along the bottom of the fence so small dogs and puppies cannot squeeze through. If you have a Yorkie, dachshund, miniature poodle, or any small breed, Puppy Picket is the difference between a fence that contains them and one that does not. It is a popular add-on for our Wesley Chapel and Lutz pet-owner customers.

Is your aluminum fence pool-code compliant?

Yes. Florida residential pool code requires a minimum 4-foot fence with self-closing, self-latching gates and pickets spaced under 4 inches. Our pool-code aluminum fences exceed those standards and pass first-attempt inspections in Pasco, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties.

Will aluminum fence rust in Florida?

No. Quality aluminum fence is fundamentally rust-proof — aluminum simply does not rust the way iron does. Combined with a baked-on powder coat finish, our fences hold their finish for decades even within sight of Tampa Bay salt air.

How does aluminum compare to wrought iron?

Aluminum fence delivers the same elegant look as wrought iron at a lower cost, with zero rust risk, easier installation, and a lifetime warranty. The only reason to choose true wrought iron today is if you specifically want the heaviness and historical authenticity of forged steel.

How tall does my fence need to be for a pool in Florida?

Florida residential pool code requires the barrier to be a minimum of 48 inches above grade with a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens away from the pool. Many Wesley Chapel HOAs and Pasco County require 5′ or 6′. We design pool fence projects to meet or exceed your local code.

Chain Link Fence

View Service
How much does chain link fence cost per foot?

Galvanized chain link runs $12–$22 per linear foot installed in the Tampa Bay area depending on height and gauge. Black vinyl-coated adds roughly $4–$8 per foot. Commercial-grade and tall heights (8′+) cost more. We provide free estimates with itemized labor, materials, and gates.

Galvanized vs black vinyl-coated — which is better?

Galvanized is the most affordable and lasts decades, but it has that classic silver look. Black vinyl-coated chain link essentially disappears against trees and landscaping — many of our Wesley Chapel and Dade City customers prefer it because it looks far less industrial. Both have the same structural performance.

Can chain link fence keep dogs in?

Yes — chain link is one of the best fences for containing dogs because they cannot chew through it, climb it easily, or squeeze through panels. For smaller breeds we recommend tighter mesh or adding a tension wire at the bottom to prevent digging out.

Do you add privacy slats?

Absolutely. Privacy slats woven through chain link give you 75–90% privacy at a fraction of the cost of a solid fence. They are popular for commercial sites, dog runs, and properties where you need privacy without the price tag of vinyl or wood.

Can you install commercial chain link with barbed wire?

Yes. We regularly install 6′–8′ commercial chain link with three-strand barbed wire or razor ribbon for industrial sites, storage yards, and security applications throughout Pasco, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties.

Farm Style Fence

What is the best fence for horses?

For horses we typically recommend 3- or 4-rail wood fence, vinyl ranch rail, or no-climb woven wire with a top board. Barbed wire is dangerous for horses. The right choice depends on your acreage, herd size, and budget — we walk every farm before recommending a system.

How much does pasture fence cost per acre?

A 1-acre square enclosure is roughly 835 linear feet of perimeter. Field fence with steel T-posts runs $4–$8 per foot installed; 3-rail wood is $18–$30 per foot. Cross-fencing for rotational grazing adds linear footage. We give you a per-acre number after we walk the property.

Do you build custom ranch entry gates?

Yes — round-rail entries with overhead headers and brand or family-name signs are one of our specialties. We build them in pressure-treated cedar, oak, or steel pipe with custom hardware. A great ranch entry is a permanent piece of curb appeal.

Can you install electric fence?

Yes. We install high-tensile electric fence with quality energizers, ground systems, and gate handles for cattle and horse rotation. Properly grounded electric is one of the most reliable, lowest-maintenance ways to manage large pasture systems.

Do I need a permit for farm fence in Pasco County?

Most agricultural fence on agricultural-zoned land in Pasco and Hernando counties does not require a permit. Residential fence usually does. We handle all permitting as part of every project so you do not have to chase down county offices.

Custom Projects

Do you repair fences other contractors installed?

Yes — we repair any fence regardless of who originally installed it. Storm damage, rotted posts, leaning panels, gate hardware failure, broken latches, and chewed pickets are all routine for us. Often a targeted repair saves you 70–90% versus a full replacement.

Can you install an automated driveway gate?

Absolutely. We install automated swing and slide gates with keypad entry, remote controls, smartphone app integration, vehicle loops, and emergency vehicle access. We work with all the major operator brands (LiftMaster, Viking, Doorking, Linear) and handle the complete electrical and structural install.

How much does it cost to paint or stain a wood fence?

Re-staining or painting a wood fence runs $2–$5 per linear foot in the Tampa Bay area depending on prep work, color, and number of coats. We pressure-wash, repair any damaged sections, and apply UV-protective stain or paint. Done well, this can take a tired fence and make it look new again.

What if I have a project that does not fit any standard category?

Tell us what you are trying to accomplish. We have built custom security enclosures, dog runs with cement floors, equipment yards, archery backstops, garden fences over old wells, pet-safe pool barriers, and one-off custom welded entries. If it involves fence or gate, we can probably build it.

Do you offer emergency fence repair?

For storm damage, vehicle impacts, and security situations we prioritize emergency calls and can typically be on site within 24–48 hours. Same-day service is available for property owners who need a yard secured for pets or kids.

Land Clearing + Fence

View Service
Do you offer land clearing without a fence?

No. Land clearing + fence is a single bundled service — we only clear property as part of a fence project we are also installing. If you need stand-alone land clearing, forestry mulching, or full-lot work, we are happy to point you to a specialist.

Why do I need land clearing + fence as a bundle?

Posts go in straight, plumb, and at proper depth. That is hard to do when the fence line runs through palmettos, fallen oaks, or 20-year-old undergrowth. Bundling land clearing + fence means we clear the line, set posts properly, and finish the install on one schedule — no two contractors, no rework, no surprise change orders.

Do you remove the cleared debris?

Yes. We haul off cleared brush, small trees, and debris as part of the land clearing + fence scope. For larger trees or stumps that require a crane or stump grinder, we coordinate with our equipment partners.

Can you clear an entire lot, not just a fence line?

Within a land clearing + fence project, we handle pre-fence clearing on residential lots and along fence lines on larger properties. We do not take full-lot or stand-alone clearing jobs — for larger acreage, a forestry mulching specialist is usually the right fit, and we will point you to one.

How much does land clearing + fence cost?

Light brush clearing along a fence line runs $1.50–$4.00 per linear foot depending on density. Small tree removal is quoted by the tree. We bundle land clearing + fence into a single itemized estimate so you see the total cost up front.

Do you do land clearing + fence in Wesley Chapel and Dade City?

Yes — Wesley Chapel and Dade City have a lot of properties with overgrown rear lot lines that have not been touched in years. We run land clearing + fence projects across both cities every month.

How long does land clearing + fence take?

A typical residential lot with 200–400 linear feet of moderate brush is one to two days of clearing, followed by 2–4 days of fence install. Heavy palmetto or hardwood undergrowth on a one-acre rural lot runs three to five days of clearing. We schedule the clearing the week before the fence install so the crew shows up to clean dirt, not a jungle.

Do I need a permit for land clearing + fence in Pasco or Hernando County?

For fence-line clearing on residential property paired with a fence install, a permit is usually not required for the clearing — though the fence itself does need one. Larger lot clearing — especially on properties with protected trees, wetlands buffers, or active development conditions — may need a Pasco or Hernando County Vegetation Removal Permit. We walk the property with you first, flag anything that needs county sign-off, and pull all required permits as part of the scope.

What is the difference between land clearing and forestry mulching?

Traditional clearing means cutting, grubbing, hauling, and stump removal — you end up with bare dirt ready for posts. Forestry mulching grinds standing vegetation in place into a layer of mulch on top of the soil — faster and cheaper for large acreage, and the mulch helps prevent erosion. Our land clearing + fence service uses traditional clearing along fence lines because posts need clean dirt. We do not handle stand-alone full-lot forestry mulching — for that we will point you to a specialist.

Can you clear out saw palmetto along the fence line?

Yes. Saw palmetto is the toughest part of most Pasco and Hernando fence-line jobs — the root mass runs deep and re-sprouts quickly if you just cut the tops. We grub them out with the equipment, not just cut them down. That way your post line stays clean and palmetto does not come back through your new fence in a year.

Will you remove a protected oak or heritage tree?

No — and we will tell you up front if a tree on your fence line is protected under the Pasco or Hernando County tree ordinance. Live oaks, heritage oaks, and certain mature hardwoods require a county permit and an arborist sign-off, and in many cases cannot be removed at all. We design the fence run around them or help you start the permit conversation before any work begins.

Do you call Sunshine 811 before clearing or digging?

Yes — on every job. Florida law requires a Sunshine 811 locate ticket a minimum of two full business days before any digging, grubbing, or post-setting work. We file the request before crews mobilize. That keeps your underground utility lines, our crew, and your wallet safe — hitting a buried cable or gas line is expensive, dangerous, and entirely avoidable.
